Man who hid in dam to avoid police disputes charges

A WANGARATTA man has denied some allegations including that he allegedly entered multiple properties of people not known to him in Wangaratta in search of his ex-partner.

The 40 year old man appeared via Webex in custody at the Wangaratta Magistrates' Court for a contest mention last week.

The court had previously heard the man tried to allegedly contact his former partner, who had taken an intervention order against him, multiple times throughout last year.

The accused had allegedly approached people who were not known to him and attended residential addresses in Wangaratta, stating he was searching for his partner and child.

During one incident in September last year, the accused was allegedly witnessed climbing up an embankment at Merriwa Park and entered the Central Wangaratta Motel, and was captured on CCTV knocking on a window.

The man also allegedly attended Billabong Motel and was seen by a witness looking through windows.

In October, the accused also allegedly entered properties on Glenrowan Road in Wangaratta South.

At one point, the offender allegedly climbed up a tree claiming he was looking for his partner and child, and allegedly fled into paddocks when police arrived, entering a dam where he remained for a number of hours.

The court had also heard witnesses believed the man allegedly appeared drug affected.

The man's defence solicitor Anthony Coote told the court his client disputed factual elements of his alleged offending, and denied he attended some of the properties.

Mr Coote said the accused admitted he entered the motels in Wangaratta but denied he was there trying to find his partner.

The court heard there could be almost 30 witnesses, including police members, to give evidence at a future hearing.

The accused indicated in court to Magistrate Peter Dunn he would be willing to plead guilty to most of the matters, rather than wait for the hearing.

However, Magistrate Dunn said a psychologist report would be needed and Mr Coote said he would make further inquiries for his client.

The case is scheduled for the two day hearing in April but may return to court sooner and the man remained in custody.
