Become a leader with Australian Army cadets

WANGARATTA’S 33 Army Cadet Unit is hosting a recruitment night on Thursday, February 22 from 7.30pm.

Wangaratta unit operates regular parade nights on Thursdays during school terms from 6pm to 9.30pm with additional camps during the year.

Youth have opportunities to learn in a military style training environment to challenge themselves to achieve goals, build confidence and resilience, while developing skills of team building, effective collaboration, radio communications, friendship with a strength-based approach.

Thirty-three Army Cadet Unit has community partnerships with the Wangaratta RSL providing service for Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, second 24th Battalion annual services while recently partnering with Carevan Wangaratta to assist with community meals, as well as the Wangaratta Lions Club and Wangaratta Chronicle supporting the local marathon.

A range of cadet leadership opportunities are achievable twice annually.

A selection of cadets are invited to Puckapunyal Military area after successfully completing criteria to learn and obtain skills to mentor younger peers.

Recently seven Wangaratta cadets attended leadership courses.

Four cadets successfully completed the junior leadership course, learning how to lead a group of cadets including safety planning, emergency responses, teaching lessons and how to instruct commands.

Cadet Lucas Butler, who successfully completed his Lance Corporal training, said Australian Army cadets was a supportive and engaging program that is inclusive of everyone.

“I am proud I have completed my junior leadership course with a goal to join the army in the future,” he said.

Another cadet, Corporal Toby Pearson, has successfully completed the senior leadership course gaining enhanced skills in drill, administration, assessment training and now has the ability to grade junior cadets training.

"In my time at cadets I have served my due diligence and subsequently have learnt respect and discipline that a military style training can provide," Cpl Toby Pearson, who completed his sergeant training, said.

Two senior cadets have successfully completed courses of Cadet Warrant Officer and Cadet Under Officer providing them the skills and training to manage and maintain a unit level.

Cadet Under Officer Connor Brown is excited to increase community engagement in the Wangaratta community stating the importance of cadets providing their time to services who support local people in need.

33 Army Cadet Unit has four adult staff members with a range of training and experience to support all cadets.

“Our recruitment night is an opportunity to come and view the unit, meet the staff and engage with our cadets,” Captain (AAC) Paul Zuch said.

“Our unit is open to all youth who meet the age requirements with no prior registration necessary.”
