CFA crews fighting Glenrowan grassfire

MULTIPLE CFA crews have been dispatched to a Glenrowan grass and scrub fire near Glenrowan-Moyhu Road Monday afternoon.

A CFA spokesperson said 27 CFA units arrived on scene of a grass and scrub fire around 2:05pm north of Mills Road, which by 3pm had grown to about 20 hectares.

“Air attack support was requested to assist ground crews,” he said.

As of 4pm, the incident remained ongoing with the fire not yet under control.

Advice messages were issued via the VicEmergency app for Glenrowan, Greta West, Laceby and South Wangaratta residents around 4pm.

The message advised residents the fire was travelling in a northeasterly direction towards Glenrowan and the fire was not expected to cross the Hume Freeway.

A watch and act message was issued for the Glenrowan community at 3:30pm, asking residents to prepare to leave.

"It is strongly recommended you prepare to leave if you are in the forested area to the south of the Hume Freeway," the message read.

Glenrowan CFA advised the community to avoid the area, stay informed and plan for what you will do if the situation changes.

The school bus service to Greta West and Hansonville was cancelled due to the fire in the area.
