Looking back on the Oxley Memorial opening

OXLEY Shire was very large (2789 square km) when it was formed in 1865. Hume and Hovell named the area after the NSW Surveyor – General John Oxley in 1824 on their way to the southern coast of what would become Victoria.

In 1862 the Oxley Roads District was noted in the government gazette on 18th July. It was formally gazetted on 21st November 1862 by Governor Sir Henry Barkly...
