Council reaches out to local people experiencing financial stress

DON'T GO IT ALONE: Council wants people who will struggle to pay their rates by June 30 to let them know in advance.

THE Rural City of Wangaratta is strongly urging anyone who is unable to pay their rates by the extended June 30 due date, to reach out and contact council.

Council director of corporate services Sarah Brindley said very few people have asked for assistance to date, however, council has prepared a Community Financial Assistance Package that forecasts $1.236 million in deferred payments and $185,000 in lost revenue until the end of this financial year.

It’s estimated that 15 per cent ($1.124m) in rates will not be paid on time due to financial hardship caused by the COVID-19 crisis.
