Council proposes 2% rate rise and 6% increase on waste charges due to COVID-19

THE Rural City of Wangaratta council will release it draft 2020-21 budget paper today citing known losses estimated at $500,000 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Council proposes a budget that carries a two per cent rate rise in line with the State Government’s Fair Go rates cap, together with a six per cent hike in waste charges, burdened by increases in the State Government’s landfill levy due to take effect in January 2021.

But it’s the loss of income to council from the temporary closure of money generators such as the performing arts and convention centre, as well as the indoor sports and aquatic centre which underpin council’s shaky bottom line.
