McCarthy says gelding almost back to best after strong run at Caulfield

WANGARATTA trainer Dan McCarthy believes stable star Ashlor is almost back to top form after the gelding finished a close second in Saturday’s $125,000 Lamaro’s Hotal Handicap over 1000m at Caulfield.

After a break of four weeks following his third place finish at Echuca in March, Ashlor looked fresh as he charged to the front of the field and stayed there for much of the race.

But just when it looked like the six-year-old would register his second win of 2020, pre-race favourite Diamond Effort came surging down the outside to steal victory by half a length.
