RECOVERY MODE: Australian Rail Track Corporation teams prepare removing the twisted carriages following the derailment at Wallan on Thursday.

THE Rail Tram and Bus Union Victoria (RTBU) has criticised the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) for allowing XPT to travel at normal speed under the control of a pilot where the fatal derailment at Wallan happened on Thursday while state services such as V/Line were operating under automatic speed restrictions of 25kph.

RTBU Victoria secretary Luba Grigorovitch yesterday said Australia’s rail community has been in mourning since Thursday evening, following the tragic loss of two lives in the Wallan.

“Our members are hurting, and our hearts go out to the families and friends of the two workers who were killed,” Ms Grigorovitch said.“But along with our grief, the rail community is also angry at the Federal Government for its failure to invest in a safe and reliable 21st century interstate rail network.”
