ONE of the most watched sporting events of the year takes place today with the 54th NFL Super Bowl.
Today, there will be Super Bowl parties held in backyards and licensed premises where fans do everything American while watching the game, similar to our traditions on AFL or NRL grand finals.
Cameron Miller from Oxley is a recent convert to American football, accidentally watching a game seven years ago and now he hosts his own annual party featuring all things American including beer, mac and cheese balls, nachos and buffalo wings.
“I caught a Patriots game by chance on a day off and I got right into it,” he said.
“I liked their style of play and it got me in.”
For the less informed the New England Patriots with Tom Brady at quarterback have dominated the competition since 2001 playing in nine super bowls, winning six with Brady MVP four times.
“It’s a rude shock that we won’t be there this year.”
Today’s Super Bowl is between Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers.
The Chiefs won their last Super Bowl in 1970 and the 49ers back in 1994 so both sets of fans are desperate for a win.
Cameron will be cheering for the Chiefs for two purely selfish reasons.
“I have an American workmate at Brown Brothers, John Burkett, and he will be barracking for the 49ers,” he said.
“Plus, I don’t want the 49ers to win.
“They have won five Super Bowls and the Patriots and the Steelers have won the most with six and we want to stay exclusive.
Super Bowl LIV will be broadcast on Prime TV from 10am.
