Move to gather evidence for Prosecco rights fight

GRAPE EXPECTATIONS: With harvest time approaching, local growers of Prosecco await the outcome of free trade agreement negotiations.

WINE industry bodies have welcomed news the federal government will fund research to help clarify the legal basis for protecting geographic indications for wines such as Prosecco in trade agreements.

Monash University researchers received a Federal Government grant of $100,000 through the Australian Research Council’s Linkage Projects, to present evidence-based recommendations on geographical indication claims to Australia’s government and industry bodies.

It follows European Union (EU) attempts to protect Italian wine producers from international competition by claiming Prosecco as a geographic indicator (GI) rather than a grape variety, and prohibiting its use in marketing by all producers of the sparkling wine outside northern Italy.
