Hidden disaster of family violence during, after bushfires

A RISE in family violence during disaster events has support agencies calling for a more proactive response to the issue and potential victims.

A Wangaratta based agency that supports victims of family violence has been championing for a first aid type response that guides people to relevant support at the time they present to government agencies during a disaster event.

After the Black Saturday bushfires Wangaratta’s Women’s Health Goulburn North East (WHGNE) conducted research into the effects of disaster on families and relationships and they are now assisting their Gippsland colleagues at the coal face of the current bushfires.
