Supreme Court ruling ends Dr Fidge’s council contest

JULIAN Fidge’s latest appeal against the Wangaratta Council’s countback method to fill the vacancy created by the sudden death of Cr Ruth Amery in 2017 was dismissed by the Supreme Court last week, in what he called a “strange” result.

On September 20, Judge Timothy Ginnane deemed Dr Fidge’s argument that the provisions governing the council’s countback method were unconstitutional, as “futile”.

In the October 2016 council election, four councillors were elected to the city ward and Dr Fidge was not.
