Damning statistics show 227 fatalities on Victorian railways

THE high number of deaths by train in Victoria has been highlighted as an issue that needs attention during discussion of a Bill in parliament that aims to increase rail safety.

Deputy leader of the Nationals Steph Ryan, during her argument to have the Bill reassessed, noted that in four years since 2014-15, some 227 fatalities have occurred on Victorian railways, with the majority of them by suicide.

Along with inadequate mental health services, Ms Ryan believes that the state’s “complicated rail arrangements” are a factor that “leave the fencing and protection of the train lines from the public more open”.

Ms Ryan said the Bill in summary transfers “regulatory functions around the safety of rail and tram infrastructure” from the state to a national level.
