WANGARATTA Highway Patrol was highly visible on local roads and stopped more than 130 bad drivers during their four-day Operation Argus on the weekend.
The statewide road blitz, between last Thursday and Sunday, was created as a direct response to the excessive number of lives lost across the state this year (196), which currently tallies 43 per cent higher (137) than this time last year.
Wangaratta police conducted breath tests on 1365 drivers during the operation and recorded 128 traffic offences and eight impaired driving offences.
Acting Sergeant Patrick Murray of Wangaratta Highway Patrol said despite the some drivers displaying poor behaviour, the operation was a success as police were able to intercept a range of offenders.
“Police were generally satisfied with the weekend, however, one impaired driver is one too many,” Act Sgt Murray said.
