Four face charges after police chase in Wangaratta ends in Benalla

AN alleged burglary from a Wangaratta home which eventuated into a police pursuit came to a dramatic finish with four people arrested in Benalla on Monday afternoon.

Wangaratta police were called to a burglary at an unoccupied Phillipson Street address at around 2.10pm, however, a black Volkswagon Golf Sedan was seen leaving the property before police arrived.

Police made multiple attempts to intercept the car through Wangaratta before it entered the Hume Freeway at excessive speed and began its attempted escape toward Benalla.

Detective Sergeant Chris Hill of Wangaratta CIU said the Police Air Wing unit was despatched during the pursuit just north of Benalla and a tyre deflation device was successfully activated before the sedan entered Benalla.

“They (the aviation unit) monitor the movement of the car to assist police on the ground,” Det Sgt Hill said.
