WANGARATTA Rovers have officially announced themselves as a genuine finals contender following a gutsy come-from-behind eight-point victory against Wangaratta at the WJ Findlay Oval yesterday.

In one of the closest contests between the pair in recent memory, the Hawks recovered from a six-goal second quarter deficit to lead by 11 points midway through the final quarter before withstanding a number of challenges by the Magpies.

Wangaratta flyer Matt Grossman reduced the margin to five points after a 50-metre penalty before Brad Melville’s flying shot at the 15-minute mark sailed just wide.
