A SUPREME Court appeal over a native title settlement worth $33 million, concerning a large part of central Victoria including Wangaratta, could delay financial contributions to the Taungurung people.

As part of a Victorian Government agreement that formally recognises the Taungurung people as the traditional owners of land, which includes an area from Wangaratta to Bright, several Aboriginal groups have lodged an appeal with the court to have the agreement declared unlawful.

Ngurai-Illum Wurrung, Waywurru and Wurundjeri have filed the claim, groups that Bpangerang Elder Uncle Freddie Dowling says have less of a claim than his group does to local land.
