WHAT’S THE MAIL?: It was good news for Independent Helen Haines, bad news for Liberal candidate Steve Martin, as postal votes began to be counted in Wangaratta yesterday, with a slight preference gain to Mr Martin still well short of any ‘miracle turnaround’ in voting patterns he need to snatch an unlikely victory. ANY remote hope Liberal candidate for Indi, Steve Martin, was holding onto for a miracle postal vote preference share, to resurrect victory from Independent Helen Haines, was fading away in Wangaratta yesterday afternoon.

Australian Electoral Commission workers commenced counting the first of 6000 postal votes received so far in Indi.

At the time of going to press, some 684 votes had been counted, with their two party preferred split being 51.9 per cent in favour of Mr Martin and 48.1 per cent for Dr Haines.
