A 200-strong clan of ‘team orange’ supporters flanked Indi independent Cathy McGowan yesterday as she walked into parliament to make her final speech as an MP.

Apart from the chorus of orange flare, a flamboyant style hasn’t been a trademark during Ms McGowan’s tenure, with her ‘no deals’ policy and refusal to side with major parties on principle.

From the outset when she won the 2013 election by 439 votes over former MP Sophie Mirabella, her focus has been to vote on legislation on its merits and has rarely played into the circus or war of words that can sometimes be the very essence of Australian politics.
