Nature’s light show sparks sporadic fires across region

THE booming storm which occurred early Friday morning put Country Fire Authority (CFA) District 23 on high alert as tree fires were expected to ignite days after the lightning strikes.

The loud storm, which passed through the Wangaratta area at around 4am on Friday, was responsible for tree fires in Tatong, Oxley, Winton North, Moyhu and Warrenbayne up to 11 hours after the storm had cleared.

CFA D23 duty officer Trevor Ebbles said tree fires caused by lightning strikes may not ignite instantly, but instead, could smoulder inside the tree for days before a fire starts.
