A COMBINED push by Regional Cities Victoria (RCV) to get people who work in Melbourne to live in the country is gaining momentum in a bid to build populations in areas like Wangaratta.

Rural City of Wangaratta Mayor Dean Rees and chief executive officer Brendan McGrath attended a forum with RCV yesterday following a meeting with Minister for Regional Development Jaclyn Symes on Wednesday to find ways under a $15 million initiative to attract new residents to regional centres.

The obvious key stumbling block is the North East’s poor rail service, however, if the plan is successful it will ease major city congestion, build regional communities, and offer new lifestyle experiences for city people.
