LOCAL residents are being encouraged to attend a community forum next Thursday, February 14, which will discuss the importance of human rights for equality in Australia.

Lee Carnie, a senior lawyer at the Human Rights Law Centre, said many people are surprised to learn that Australia is the only western democracy without a Bill or Charter of Rights, and that the benefits of implementing a Charter of Rights would be among the topics discussed on the night.

The forum, to be facilitated by Carnie, will include a panel made up of Emeritus Professor Gillian Triggs, former president of the Australian Human Rights Commission (2012-2017), Aboriginal lawyer and human rights advocate Teela Reid and Father Peter Mcleod Miller, Anglican Rector of St Matthew’s Church Albury.
