Mayor explains council’s lifeline for 2018 festival

WANGARATTA is planning to host a music event over November’s Melbourne Cup weekend that could bring an end to the long-lived jazz festival in town.

Rural City of Wangaratta mayor Dean Rees believes if the potential multi-genre music event gets support it could be the “death knell” for the jazz festival which he says has maybe had its day.

He has also defended a council allocated sum of $100,000 which was given to the jazz and blues festival committee in September last year as a lifeline to allow the 2018 event to actually go ahead.
