Toilet closure threatens 126 year old annual picnic gathering

AN old fashioned drop hole toilet at the Mt Bruno picnic ground has sparked a dispute between Parks Victoria and members of the local community.

For 126 years friends, family and neighbours, including 80 at last year’s event, have gathered for the annual Mt Bruno Picnic at the site on the last Saturday in October but now Parks Victoria has threatened to remove the existing toilet facilities because they are deemed unsuitable and obsolete.

An offer by the community to replace the old toilets with a new ‘compostable’ system has been rejected by Parks Victoria who insist organisers of any events at the site will need to provide portable toilets.
