A DESIRE to improve health services, education, and use of renewable energy are three major platforms that newly nominated independent candidate for Indi, Dr Helen Haines, will use as motivation if successful at this year’s federal election.

Dr Haines, who is a midwife and nurse and has a PhD in medical science, was elected to carry the flame from Cathy McGowan at a forum supported by 200 Voices 4 Indi participants on Saturday.

The 57 years old underwent six hours of questioning and deliberation at the forum, alongside two other nominees, Cathy’s sister Helen McGowan, and Strathbogie woman Angela Tough.

Ms McGowan officially confirmed on Monday morning that she would not contest the 2019 federal election.
