WELCOME ARRIVAL: Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton (left) and The Police Association of Victoria secretary Sergeant Wayne Gatt (centre) enter King George V Gardens in Wangaratta escorted by Commander Clive Rust after their 1000km walk.

AFTER a gruelling 23 days to raise more than $500,000 for police veterans, Victoria Police and The Police Association of Victoria took the final steps of the 1000 kilometre Head to Head walk yesterday into King George Gardens.

Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton began his trek in Mallacoota on October 1 while The Police Association of Victoria secretary Sergeant Wayne Gatt began in Mildura on the same day and along the way to Wangaratta they aimed to raise funds and awareness for retired police veterans living with mental health issues.

A massive crowd of serving and retired police officers, other emergency service personnel, family and friends, Wangaratta mayor Ken Clarke, a large media contingent and the general public were there to welcome the pair as they walked through the gates from Ovens Street.
