An excited and energetic cast of students from Galen Catholic College will bring Broadway musical Hairspray to life when they take to the stage at the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre this week.
Hairspray is set in Baltimore, Maryland in 1962 and tells the story of quirky, plus-sized teenager Tracy Turnblad who has one dream – to dance on The Corny Collins Show.
When she’s put in detention with African-American students in the school, they teach her some of their dance moves, and her new found groove wins her a spot on Corny’s show.
Overnight, Tracy transforms from ‘a nobody’ into a star, and uses her new-found influence to advocate for racial integration on the television show.
Artistic director Julie Nolan said there are 110 students from years seven to 12 involved in this year’s production, performing on stage, involved in the crew backstage and playing in the orchestra.
