A MONUMENTAL component of Wangaratta Magpies’ 2017 premiership is preparing himself for his first interleague experience, with Dylan Van Berlo among eight other Wangaratta Magpies player named in the squad set to take on Western Region tomorrow.
After starting at Rutherglen in the Tallangatta and District League and playing 10 games at TAC Cup level with the Murray Bushrangers in 2013, Van Berlo came to Wangaratta and after putting re-occurring hamstring issues behind him he enjoyed a stellar 2017 season, culminating in the premiership.
It was in the decider that Van Berlo’s rise to the top echelons of the Ovens and Murray became more than well regarded as he hauled in over 15 marks, many of those intercepts, across the Magpies’ half back line.
Van Berlo could have arguably run out with the Did Simpson medal as the best player on the ground if it wasn’t for Michael Newton’s game-changing eight-goal haul.
Van Berlo has managed to find that form again in 2018 and was named to the initial 43-man Ovens and Murray interleague squad.
After all the cuts, the man they call ‘VB’ looks set to make his league representative debut in a star studded line up, which boasts the likes of Magpie teammates Michael Newton, Michael Bordignon, Jamie Anderson, Mat Grossman, Joe Richards and Daniel Sharrock.
