A TEARFUL Sophie Mirabella embraced her husband and her lawyers after a Wangaratta County Court jury said an article published by the Benalla Ensign in 2016 was defamatory.
The former Indi MP has successfully sued the Benalla Ensign and its former editor Libby Price for defamation for publishing an incorrect claim that Ms Mirabella had pushed political opponent Cathy McGowan at the opening of a new wing at Cooinda Aged Care in Benalla.
Ms Mirabella said she was grateful her belief in the justice system had cleared her name.
“It shouldn’t have got to this point, it should’ve been fixed up soon after the Ensign published,” she told the Wangaratta Chronicle after the verdict was delivered on Wednesday afternoon.
“It’s been a long, difficult process and I just thank the common sense of the jury.
“I thank my family who’ve stood by me and suffered through a lot of this, and of course my lawyers and friends who’ve been there.”
