PROMISE turned to despair for local shooter James Willett at the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday, with the talented marksman failing to capture the gold medal he so desperately craved.

Willett was the first man eliminated in the final of the double trap event on the Gold Coast, finishing sixth from six finalists.

After a poor start, Willett seemed to have avoided the first elimination when he strung together some nice efforts to move into third spot.

However, he struggled towards the end of the round and finished by hitting just 23 of the 30 targets on offer.

Willett was eliminated as he was one behind his next closest competitor with Scotland’s David McMath going on to win the gold medal.

Willett had entered the final in reasonable form, having hit 134 of a possible 150 targets on offer to qualify fourth for the final.
