A WANGARATTA man who was walking a friend home after a night drinking and watching football became involved in a brawl that eventually claimed his life, a Wangaratta court heard yesterday.

    Russell Berry, 41, died from injuries allegedly inflicted by Jacob Allan, 23, who appeared at his committal hearing before Magistrate Ian Watkins this week charged with Mr Berry’s murder.

    Nino Sopora, a friend of Berry’s who was hospitalised after the brawl, said the pair had been drinking alcohol and watching football at Paul Kerr’s home in Wills Street on Friday night, May 29 last year.

    He said they had finished the slab of beer by the end of the game but he could not remember them smoking cannabis.

    He said he decided to leave after the game ended and Berry had said he would walk him home.
