Marklew aiming higher

AFTER solid round one performance, local football rising star Alex Marklew is hopeful he will be able to string together some consistent game time with Essendon’s VFL side.

Marklew endured an interrupted pre-season but still managed to gain selection in the Bombers’ round one VFL clash against Frankston last Saturday.

While AFL listed stars Jackson Merrett (five goals), Kyle Langford and Matthew Leuenberger starred, Marklew was more than solid in the Bombers’ 21.17 (143) to 6.5 (41).

Playing mostly on the wing throughout the afternoon but also spent time in attack late in the game but missed his only opportunity in front of goal.

Speaking candidly earlier in the week, Marklew was pleased with his opening performance but knows he still has to continue to get better.

“It’s pretty hard not to do well in a 100-point win but individually I thought my defensive game was really strong,” he said.
