ANOTHER large crowd and successful staging of Saturday’s blockbuster match between Richmond and Essendon at the Wangaratta Showgrounds hopes to strengthen the city’s bid for more AFL pre-season matches, as well as host this year’s Ovens and Murray grand final.
Rural City of Wangaratta councillors and officials took the opportunity to canvass support from visiting O&M board members, and AFL officials, for a grand final and future AFL pre-season games respectively.
They did so as the crowd – officially ticketed at 7681 but said to be 8000 or higher – was accommodated magnificently, as were the players with one of the best prepared grounds in regional Victoria.
AFL media relations manager Patrick Keane told the Wangaratta Chronicle yesterday that the AFL was “extremely pleased” with Saturday’s event, despite the rather one-sided match.
“The ground looked fantastic,” Mr Keane said.
