ALTHOUGH he made history bearing the Queen’s Baton, the real privilege for Olympic gold medallist Dean Woods was to carry it in his hometown.

Wangaratta residents became a part of history on Wednesday afternoon when they lined the streets to support the local batonbearers participating in the Queen’s Baton Relay.

Mr Woods said the way the community’s pride and involvement were highlights of the relay.

“Even though I’ve lived overseas and on the Gold Coast for many years I’ve always come back to this area,” he said.

“I’m one of 14 batonbearers but there are only four athletes, we have other community members, like people who have worked with Camp Quality or public service.

“The best thing about the Queen’s Baton Relay is that community involvement, the Commonwealth Games are about sport but they’re also about inclusion, this is a real community event.”
