The Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) reported a blackwater event, a natural phenomenon that occurs after heavy rain during otherwise dry conditions, has occurred in the One Mile Creek at Wangaratta.

DOWNFALLS of up to 69mm of rain in Wangaratta caused a blackwater event in the One Mile Creek at Wangaratta.

The Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) reported the deluge that fell in the rural city on Saturday, January 27 resulted in an increase in catchment runoff into the creek, which due to the dry conditions upstream were not able to move through the creek system.

North East Catchment Management Authority (NECMA) manager of program implementation, Adam Green, said most of the creeks within Wangaratta throughout the three mile and one mile systems were affected.

Blackwater can cause stress to aquatic animals and even fish deaths due to the low level of dissolved oxygen.

Residents are encouraged to report fish deaths to EPA Victoria by calling 1300 372 842.
