AN 18 year old instrumental in establishing an LGBTI group for local young people has been recognised as the Rural City of Wangaratta’s young citizen of the year.

Wangaratta High School student Darby Fullerton developed Kings, Queens and Aces after attending last year’s Midsumma march, where he was asked if there was a group for LGBTI youth in Wangaratta.

“It was suggested I should look to start one, so we came up with a name, some meeting places, and we have seven to 11 people regularly attending,” he said.

“It’s a nice safe place where people can come and relax.

“Some of the people can often not get out of the house and socialise, so it gives them a group to get out with.

“In announcing Darby’s award on Friday, rural city mayor Ken Clarke said it took the Glenrowan resident “a great amount of personal courage to establish the group and lead the way for others”.
