WANGARATTA CFA will be better equipped to respond to fire events in the North East thanks to the introduction of 10 additional professional firefighters at the Wangaratta Fire Brigade.
The extra members joining the 25 career firefighters currently stationed at Wangaratta include six new recruits and four firefighters who have transferred from other stations.
District 23 operations manager Stewart Kreltszheim said the new members would enhance the CFA’s ability to operate their new specialist rescue pod, which arrived at the Wangaratta station last month.
“Once they’re familiarised with the new equipment, the recruits will give us greater capacity to service the whole North East,” he told the Wangaratta Chronicle.
“Greater numbers will allow us to increase the number of firefighters we send on call-outs to emergencies, providing more support on the ground.”
Mr Kreltszheim said the boost in staff members was primarily in response to the brigade’s increasing involvement in emergency medical response, as well as the broadening of its response area.
“We’re focused on building our first responder medical capacity,” he said.
