    WANGARATTA Highway Patrol officers have made it their mission to ensure everyone gets to their destination safely this festive season.

    Leading Senior Constable Colin Boyle of Wangaratta Highway Patrol said the statewide Operation Roadwise campaign would continue right up until January 7.

    “The main areas of our operation focus on excessive speed, seatbelts, fatigue, alcohol, drugs and driver distractions such as mobile phones,” he told the Wangaratta Chronicle.

    “Last year during the Christmas period, 14 Victorians lost their lives on our roads.

    “That means 14 families will miss out on spending Christmas with loved ones this year, and this is what we want to combat.”

    The road safety expert cited fatigue as a major issue for drivers in our region.

    “Fatigue is one of the biggest killers on country roads,” he said.

    “It’s important to remember that fatigue doesn’t just mean falling asleep; fatigue slows reaction time, concentration and decision-making skills.
