EXTREME heat forecast today and up to 45km/h “pre-frontal” winds ahead of a storm tomorrow have emergency service crews on stand-by at the Boweya-Wangaratta Road fire ground.

Some 656 hectares of Warby Ovens National Park was scorched over the weekend following a fire that started on private property mid-Friday afternoon.

Elders Weather has forecast 38 degrees Celsius today, intense heat which will have Forest Fire Management Victoria personnel manning containment lines.

Heightened concerns about strong winds on Thursday and potential lightning strikes are very apparent as well, with risk of fire reigniting from sparks.

Forest Fire Management Victoria incident control operations officer Dan McLaughlin said heat and wind are the biggest worries and it’s likely they’ll have a mixture of these in coming days.

The Fire Danger Rating for the North East until Friday is ‘high’ – with 35C forecast tomorrow, Friday 35C, Saturday 34C, and Sunday and Monday 35C.
