Good weather for ducks

WHILE the majority of the region’s sports stars were keeping dry indoors on Saturday, Wangaratta Lawn Tennis Club’s hardy aggregate bunch joined the multitude of ducks in relishing conditions at Merriwa Park.

The weather gods played their part in allowing play to go ahead, as the heavy rainfall over the preceding 48 hours ceased for long enough to see the courts dry sufficiently as to make the surface playable.

Section one players started the day by hitting the top spin drives, but as the balls became heavy, deft drop shots and angles were used which brought out a differing game style.

This game style allowed Doug Smith to capture the day with a score of 21 games.

It was tight for second position with three players equal on 20 games, with the against score determining the standings.

Coming in second position was Brendan Liddell (20-16), followed by Kevin Callahan (20-17), with John Brunner (20-18) finishing off the order of the trio.
