THE construction of an outdoor pool at the HP Barr Reserve will not happen for at least another two years.

Rural City of Wangaratta councillors met on Monday to discuss the future of the $8.9 million project that would have involved the building of a 50-metre solar heated pool.

They decided to shelve the project for two years until funding options can be researched and the YMCA’s contract comes up for renewal.

However, the building process for the $1.5 million hydrotherapy pool at the Barr Reserve, which council has had the funding in hand for 18 months, will be put out to tender next week.

Mayor Ken Clarke said failed bids for $4.4 million in Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF) federal money contributed heavily towards the decision.

Council missed out on the funding for the third time earlier this month which proved the catalyst for council’s decision to turn its focus to the existing Olympic pool on Swan Street.
