RURAL City of Wangaratta councillor Harry Bussell believes council should definitely go ahead with the building of an $8.9 million 50-metre outdoor pool at the HP Barr Reserve, describing the project as “a game changer”.
The rural city’s biggest infastructure project missed out last week, for a third successive time, on $4.4m in Federal Government funding, leaving council to consider what it now does.
Cr Bussell told the Wangaratta Chronicle he “has no problem” with borrowing money to build the pool even if it’s the full $8.9 million amount, but first he wants to see which potential council assets could be sold off to help pay for it.
“The whole plan is a game changer for Wangaratta and people will steam in there to use the facility once it’s built,” Cr Bussell said.
“There might be some council assets that the city no longer uses that we could offload to fund it.
“The existing Olympic Pool is only going to last for another couple of years and I believe it’s not safe to the public because it is too shallow.
