THE mother of the man who murdered Whorouly woman Karen Chetcuti pleaded guilty yesterday to a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Maria Cardamone, 79, of Wangaratta, appeared at Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court via video link from custody at Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, and entered a guilty plea.
She is charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice by conspiring to murder a crown witness in the murder case against her son Michael Cardamone in March this year.
A further charge of incitement to murder was withdrawn by prosecutors.
Mrs Cardamone has been in custody since her arrest and court appearance at Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court in May, where it was alleged she planned to pay a ‘hit man’ $25,000 to murder a key witness in her son’s murder trial.
Michael pleaded guilty last month to murdering Ms Chetcuti and is due to face a plea hearing at Wangaratta Supreme Court on August 21.
Meanwhile, Mrs Cardamone will remain behind bars until her plea hearing at the Wangaratta County Court circuit, starting on August 28.
