CFA volunteers call for talks

More detail needed on plans to restructure fire services

VEHEMENT opposition towards to the State Government’s plan to reform Victoria’s fire service continues to grow despite career firefighter representatives throwing their support behind the decision.

Daniel Andrews announced earlier this month that he intends to restructure the CFA into a volunteer-only based organisation while career firefighters would be moved to the new Fire Rescue Victoria agency.

The move comes after years of disagreement over a contentious EBA for paid firefighters, which has so far resulted in the CFA board being sacked and replaced, former emergency services minister Jane Garret resigning from cabinet, and Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria successfully applying for a Supreme Court injunction to prevent career firefighters from voting on the proposed EBA.

Wangaratta based volunteers this week called for the government to meet with them to explain the finer details of the plan which they say were “rushed through”.
