WANGARATTA City remains on top of the Albury Wodonga Football Association table following a 4-1 victory over St Pats FC on Sunday, but with a series of tougher matches coming up, the Red Devils will need to lift in order to hold their spot.
With captain Ryan van der Steeg missing a second straight match with a knee injury, the Devils lacked cohesion against the Patties and didn’t play to their potential.
Star striker Adam Burchell battled the negating tactics of the opposition and suffered a corked thigh early, finishing the match with one goal – his lowest total for the season to date.
But while the team would have liked to have kept a clean sheet and posted a few more goals of their own, assistant coach Mario Antonello said there were enough positives to make for a satisfying result.
“Without Dutchy (van der Steeg) we probably gave up the midfield battle in the first half – that’s two weeks in a row that we’ve done that,” Antonello said.
“We missed his talk and his leadership – we were probably a little bit lost without him.
