Pies fly, Hawks flounder

THE difference could hardly have been starker.

While both of Wangaratta’s senior Ovens and Murray football teams went into the Easter weekend as underdogs, one emerged thoroughly triumphant while the other endured humiliating defeat.

Wangaratta’s 10-goal thumping of Wodonga Raiders on Good Friday came on the back of a five-day break, and with a host of key players out through injury.

With Matt Grossman, Ben Speight, Ben Douthie and Matt Hedin all missing, few people were tipping the Magpies to get up under the lights at the Norm Minns Oval against a Raiders side coming off a 58-point win over Myrtleford.

Not only did Wangaratta defy the odds – it completely dominated the second half of the match, piling on 10.7 to 3.7 after the long break to make it three straight wins to start the season.
