BILLED as the frontrunner for the Albury Wodonga Football Association silverware in 2017, Wangaratta City did its reputation no harm with an 8-0 thrashing of Wodonga Heart in round one.
The Red Devils hit the ground running at South Wangaratta Reserve on Sunday afternoon, with George El Kotta and Adam Burchell both finding the back of the net early to give the home side a 2-0 lead after just seven minutes of play.
The onslaught continued as the Devils maintained the rage, with Burchell finishing up with four goals ahead of El Kotta (2), Connor Heffernan (1) and Mason Hope (1).
Assistant coach Mario Antonello labelled the win as an ideal way to start the season.
“As much as Heart have struggled over the past few years, we’ve never really had a massive win against them,” Antonello said.
“They generally play a pretty good defensive game, so while I was expecting us to dominate play, I thought we might get two or three goals past them, but certainly not eight.
