WANGARATTA City continued to build towards what shapes as a bountiful Albury Wodonga Football Association season on the weekend, taking out the Andronicos Cup in Albury.
The Red Devils went through the tournament undefeated, conceding just one goal throughout five preliminary games against Albury United, Twin City Wanderers, Henwood Park, Brindabella and Melrose FC before defeating Canberra side Brindabella 1-0 in the final.
Assistant coach Mario Antonello said the victory was a feather in the cap for young leader Connor Heffernan.
“It’s a terrific result for Connor as a first year coach,” Antonello said.
“There were 13 or 14 men’s teams playing, and the competition was really strong, with two teams from Brindabella, Leeton United from the Griffith league, and Henwood Park from Wagga.
“We took a team of mostly reserves and thirds players, with Ryan van der Steeg, Connor, Adam Burchell, Riley Hamilton and Austin Stone the only senior players, so to win the Andronicos Cup was great – it has been a long time since we have done that.”
