A SHOCKING run with injuries failed to derail the Wangaratta Blue train at VCTA Country Week Tennis, with a superb grand final performance seeing the side take out the Special B1 pennant.

It is the highest divisional title won by a Wangaratta Lawn Tennis Club team at Country Week since 1958, and sees the Blue Boys promoted back to A grade for next year’s tournament in Swan Hill.

The team started the week seven players strong, but lost Peter Mulrooney to a calf injury in the first set played on day one.

The quartet was helped through the penultimate day’s play by ring-ins Mike Falkenberg and Grant Chappell, ultimately winning through to Friday’s grand final against the Albury Sharks.

Matt Allen and John Brunner combined well to take the first set 8/6, which brought the pairing of Brendan Liddell and Barry Sullivan onto court in a set that took numerous turns and roundabouts before the Wangaratta duo went down in a tiebreaker 7/8.
