STAR SHOOTER: James Willett won the first World Cup in New Dehli, India.

JAMES Willett has been named Shooting Australia’s male athlete of year at the recent awards of excellence night in Sydney.

A World Cup double trap qualifying win in Rio De Janerio, winning the World Cup final in Rome which was followed by his first Olympics, where he set an Olympic record in the qualifying round in the double trap, capped a great end to 2016 for Willett.

“It was great to be recognised for the male athlete of the year by Shooting Australia,” Willett said.

“I sort of had an inkling I would win that one, I had a good year but I was still a little apprehensive as to whether I would win in the end.

“The athlete of the year, the all-round award, was won by Catherine Skinner who won the gold medal and capped off a great year as well.

“I hope I was close, hopefully this year I can work my way up there.”
